Calcium plays a crucial role in plant growth and development, serving as a fundamental secondary nutrient. It is vital for maintaining cell wall structure by forming calcium pectate compounds which give stability to cell walls and promote normal cell development. Calcium also plays a key role in signal transduction pathways within plants, facilitating responses to environmental cues and stress. Additionally, it aids in the regulation of enzyme activities and nutrient transport within the plant. A deficiency in calcium manifests as various growth abnormalities, most notably in the youngest tissues of the plant. This includes stunted root growth, curled leaves, and necrotic leaf margins or tips. Blossom end rot in tomatoes and capsicums, a common issue caused by calcium deficiency, exemplifies the importance of calcium in fruit development. These deficiency symptoms arise because calcium is immobile in plants, and thus, new tissues suffer first when calcium levels are insufficient.
