Calcium plays a crucial role in plant growth and development, serving as a fundamental secondary nutrient. It is vital for maintaining cell wall structure by forming calcium pectate compounds which give stability to cell walls and promote normal cell development. Calcium also plays a key role in signal transduction pathways within plants, facilitating responses to environmental cues and stress.
